04/10/09 - The University of Rhode Island baseball team dropped its second decision in as many days, falling to Boston College, 10-0.
The loss drops Rhody to 17-12-1 overall, while BC improved to 20-11.
Sophomore Chris Pickering got the start for the Rams and lasted 4.1 innings after allowing nine runs (five earned) on 10 hits.
"It was another disappointing loss," head coach Jim Foster said. "It's been a lack of focus offensively."
Rhody has been outscored 15-1 by opponents in the last two games and Foster says that despite allowing 15 runs, the pitching has not been as bad as it appears.
"We haven't pitched too bad," Foster said. "Our defense wasn't very good yesterday and we were a few pitches away for only allowing two or three [runs] the other day."
Sophomore Jeff Cammans was the lone Ram to record a multi-hit game, notching a pair of singles on the day. He also ended the only chance the Rams had to score in the first inning, grounding into a 6-4 fielder's choice with the bases loaded.
The Eagles opened the scoring in the bottom of the first on a Mickey Wiswall two-run homer to right field. The Eagles then added another in the second on three hits and a sacrifice fly by Brad Zapenas, to take the 3-0 lead.
BC scored one in the fourth and broke out for five runs in the fifth on three hits and some sloppy Rhode Island defense. Pickering exited the game with one out in the fifth, giving way to junior Dan Rossignol in relief.
Rossignol and sophomore Gardner Leaver combined to pitch the final 3.2 innings without allowing an earned run. Rossignol allowed an inherited base runner to score after entering the game in the fifth.
Boston College used six pitchers in the game, allowing a total of four hits and only one runner to get as far as second base after the first inning.
Rhody will take on La Salle University today at 3 p.m. in its 10th conference match-up of the season and will return to action again on Saturday for a double header beginning at noon.
The Rams are currently 7-2 in conference play.
"It's going to be another good conference match-up with La Salle," Foster said. "They're a scrappy team and it's going to be a tough series."
