04/15/09 - The University of Rhode Island baseball team hosted the Quinnipiac University Bobcats Tuesday and walked away with an 11-6 victory.

Sophomore Chris Pickering got the start for Rhody and went seven strong innings, allowing only three runs while scattering seven hits with three strikeouts.

Junior Oliver Palmer led the way offensively, registering four knocks, including a pair of doubles. Freshman Mike LeBel also drove in three for the Rams.

"I felt good about the performance today," head coach Jim Foster said. "We haven't been getting it done during the week and we played a pretty good game today."

Quinnipiac broke out first as Bobcats' shortstop Chris Migani led off the game with a double to left center and was driven in on another double by teammate Brian Monack.

Rhody responded with Palmer's first double of the game, this one a shot down the left field line. Palmer advanced to third when senior Dan Rhault reached on an error by Bobcats' first baseman Gabe Guerino and scored as sophomore Tom Coulombe beat out a would-be double play.

Both teams traded zeros in the second and Quinnipiac added another run in the third on a single by Monack and a botched groundball by Rhault.

After a fly out by sophomore Pete Mastors, the Rams loaded the bases in the bottom of the third on back-to-back-to-back singles by Palmer, Rhault and Coulombe. Junior Rob DeVeney then sent a shot to right field that was caught, scoring Palmer who tagged from third. Rhault also advanced to third on the play.

After a steal by Coulombe, sophomore Jeff Cammans was walked, again loading the bases for the Rams.

This time LeBel worked some two-out magic, smashing a double down the left field line, scoring both Rhault and Coulombe.

A Kenny Burns groundout would end the inning, but the Rhody offense could only be subdued for one inning before it struck again.

Quinnipiac posted a pair of zeros in the fourth and fifth before URI put some distance between the teams by breaking out for three more runs in its half of the fifth.
