Boyle brings high note to news

04/16/09 - In a heated discussion about journalism a couple weeks ago, my cousin asked me a question and I tried to answer with the best explanation possible. She asked me "why are there always bad things covered in the news?"
And I had to think about it, but it's true, every story in the news these days goes something like "blah, blah, economy, blah, blah, Barack Obama, blah, blah." It's only April and yet it has been a big year for news, with stories about Cpt. Chelsea Sullenberger, Caylee Anthony and of course the big bad recession.
But then there was Susan Boyle, the crazy, little, gray-haired, 47-year-old lady from Scotland that stole the world's hearts in about five minutes.
I usually hate shows like "American Idol" and the crudeness of Simon Cowell, but on the show "Britain's Got Talent," Cowell made me think that maybe he isn't always a cold-hearted robot with ice water in his veins. He gave credit where credit was due.
And at the same time, Boyle brought an uncontrollable smile to my face while I watched a real-life ugly duckling make it big. I'll be honest. I watched the video on YouTube eight times last night. Call me corny, but it tugs the heartstrings. And for the record, as of last night, there were 8,172,415 views of Boyle's performance.
According to the Scottish TV show, "Five-thirty," Boyle performed on the show to keep a promise she made to her mother to make something more of her life. After hearing the judges' decision of approval, Boyle blew a kiss to the crowd and walked off to a screaming ovation. That certainly beats hearing about Madonna trying to continue the Hollywood trend of adopting kids.
Judge Amanda Holden said on the show, "I know that everybody was against you. I honestly think that we were all being very cynical and I think that's the biggest wakeup call ever." And if I watched the clip before knowing the story, I also would have thought, "What does this woman think she's doing?"
The scene reminded me of "Rocky IV" when Rocky wins over a hostile Soviet-Union crowd in his fight with steroid-laden freak Ivan Drago. Before belting a single note, Boyle was laughed at for wanting to be as famous as singer Elaine Paige. But now according to Britain's Press Association, Cowell is already trying to get her a record deal.
To make us all happy, it'd be nice to have more news stories like this, but no one can control what happens in the news - the good, bad, ugly and everything else in between. We can only report it. But with Boyle, there's a breath of fresh air and a sense of happiness in a global climate that lacks so much of it.
Yes, pirates are taking over the news lately, but for at least a little while, that can take a backseat. And though tomorrow's headlines will surely be back to normal, it's impressive that a story about a woman that looks like a 60-year-old librarian once dominated news agencies everywhere.
Is Boyle the best singer I've seen on a TV-show contest? Yes. Have I ever seen Simon Cowell smile so much? No. Am I happy Boyle made it to my computer monitor? Absolutely.

She was awesome to say the least. But like Simon, I guessed something extraordinary would come out from that ordinary looking woman...and I was right. (Continued…)

Ms. Boyle wasn't much to look out but when she opened her mouth angels flew out. She is one incredible singer. I hope she has a great career!
