Letter: Reader criticizes tea party column
Issue date: 4/17/09 Section: Editorial/Opinion
04/17/09 - To the Cigar,
The hypocrisy in this country is rich.
It seems that anytime anybody protests anything in America, it has a political spin on it. If people protested the war five years ago, they were labeled fanatical left-wingers.
Now that April 15 has come and gone, tax protestors are seen as Fox News sellouts and ardent GOP supporters.
I'd like to point out that on the last anniversary of the Boston Tea Party, several protests were held around the country, all of which received little to no media attention.
And now that there's a Democrat in the White House, any tax protest is a ploy for the GOP, a party that has, in the last eight years, not been afraid to increase spending and reduce civil liberties.
What I am curious to find out is how war protestors would be portrayed in the news.
An unpopular war started by an unpopular Republican President has now been revamped by President Barack Obama; yet I've barely heard a peep.
So, would war protestors now be seen as right-wingers, the very people who garnered the support for the war?
If so, would that really be bad publicity for conservatives?
I think it's time the country takes off its rose-colored glasses with "Ray-ban" scratched off and "Obama" penciled in, because our new president is just like all the others.
