04/22/09 - The University of Rhode Island men's track team competed at the Princeton-Larry Ellis Invitational last weekend in its fifth meet of the outdoor season.
"The meet was fantastic," head coach John Copeland said. "The kids really did a nice job."
URI was amid a fierce and talented range of competitors, featuring teams from Georgetown University, University of Massachusetts Amherst, Syracuse University, Colombia University and Princeton University in the unscored meet.
"The competition was absolutely super," Copeland said. "It was a great chance for the kids to compete at a high competition level."
Junior Derek Peterson was the sole first-place finisher for the Rams, with a discus throw of 52.32 meters. With the winning throw, Peterson qualified for the NCAA Regional meet.
Freshman Greg Dean finished third in the long jump with a leap of 7.32 meters. The jump qualified him for Junior Nationals, and was .02 meters shy of qualifying him for NCAA Regionals.
Freshman Nick Guscott ran a season-best time in the 100-meter dash, finishing seventh with a time of 10.91 seconds. He came back to run in the 200-meter dash and finish it in 21.81 seconds, his best time.
Senior Jeffry Martins also competed in the 100-meter dash, finishing in 11th place with a season-best time of 11.03 seconds.
Senior Alex Reid ran his personal best time in the 200-meter dash, finishing sixth in the race in 22.17 seconds. Reid also competed in the 110-meter high hurtles, running a season-best 14.70 seconds.
Junior Dan Hawkins and freshman Justin Ellison both competed in the 1500-meter run, finishing 12th (4:01.93) and 15th (4:04.62) respectively. On top of track, both runners are members of the Pharmacy program at URI.
In the 800-meter run, sophomore Nick Sanborn finished fifth with a time of 1:53.82 and freshman Pat Porteus finished 20th with a time of 1:56.58.
"We have the Penn Relays, A-10s and New Englands coming up," Copeland said. "It's another month of high competition."
