04/24/09 - Dear Cigar Readers, Elitists and Non-elitists,

Cigar columnist here, bringing you the latest juice on "Gossip Girl," the CW's scandalous Monday night hit show.

Spotted: Serena, Dan, Blair, Nate, Chuck, Vanessa and Little J getting caught up in the same old story lines over and over again.

"Gossip Girl," which is now nearing the end of its second season, seems to be mirroring season 1-without a prolonged writer's strike in the middle. However, it seems the writers are getting a bit lazy in their adaptations of the "Gossip Girl" books. The season seems to be full of the same love stories, the same break-ups and the same make-ups.

With only a few episodes left, Blair and Nate have rekindled their relationship, Serena and Dan have provided a superb amount of awkwardness and Little Jenny Humphrey has gotten herself into trouble here and there. Chuck Bass seems to be the only silver lining, clad, as always, in his classy outfits. He makes plaid okay to wear and he makes it look damn good.

But at this point in the season, each week seems like a replay of the last week, and the plots no longer seem to thicken. In fact, at one point, it was as if the plots had faded to thin lines. Even Rufus and Lily are no longer contributing new story lines. The audience can only endure so many conversations about which class each of the characters fall into, whether it is between Dan and Serena or Rufus and Lily.

The preview for this coming week doesn't provide much insight on anything new or juicy. Blair is seen in the back seat of a car with Chuck, which is a throwback to the first time Blair and Nate broke up. And Serena's new boy-toy is hooking up with another girl (similar to Dan kissing Regina in the first season), while, apparently, still being with Serena.

Much like gossip in real life, it gets old really fast. However, "Gossip Girl" has managed to be picked up for a third season.

Seeing how many of the characters are in their senior year of high school, it makes it questionable how the narrator of the show (the elusive "gossip girl") will be able to follow each of the crew on through college. Most teen dramas attempt to go to the college years after three or four seasons ("Dawson's Creek," "Boy Meets World," and "Gilmore Girls"). Some dramas, such as "One Tree Hill," even opted to skip the college years entirely.

Will "Gossip Girl" be able to survive even a few episodes of the college years? Will there be a new group of elitists? Will Nate start wearing plaid pants too? Or will the Upper East Side always have little minds?

Only time can tell.

XoXo,

Libs

Libs,
He kissed Georgina, there isn't a Regina. Sorry to be so technical but it's the facts. You never do know what will happen in college. I hope it's a crazy bumpy ride that you're ready to tackle. (Continued…)

Fact Girl,
Thanks for the heads up on the error. I must have had Mean Girls on my mind as well when I was talking about Gossip Girl--Regina --- Georgina. (Continued…)
