04/29/09 - Not a moment too soon, today is the last day of classes. Though some of us will be stuck at home, others will be on an airplane somewhere with the annoyingly cramped seats and the latest edition of Sky Mall.
And while TV graces us with the unforgettable infommercial personalities of Vince Offer and Billy Mays, Sky Mall offers up the widest selection of weird, infomercial-style products.
Founded in 1990, Sky Mall is the one reliable source for shopping while flying. Though jokes are often thrown around about the Snuggie and Shamwow, some of the things in Sky Mall challenge the two TV oddities.
The Snuggie, designed to be "the blanket with sleeves," makes normal people look like members of the Heaven's Gate cult- minus the matching Nike shoes. And while the Snuggie already looks ridiculous, Jumpin Jammerz can be found in Sky Mall.
Jumpin Jammerz is a brand of adult, one-piece, footie pajamas, designed "for the big kid in all of us."
Other than the oversized one-piece outfits, Sky Mall also serves up products for the wannabe James Bond in the family. The "Stealth Secret Sound Amplifier," designed to look like an everyday Bluetooth device, enhances sound "so you can join conversations and even hear soft voices from 50 feet away." Some things shouldn't be heard by all ear ... but now thanks to Sky Mall you can hear them anyway.
Even with the different selection of spy tools, Sky Mall doesn't discriminate. If the carnival is more your scene, check out the assortment of carnie-related products including cotton candy makers, an arcade shooting gallery, hot dog carts and of course a candy crane.
And while Sky Mall is about as much of a mall as the Montgomery Flea Market is a flea market, it doesn't matter that it lacks walls or actual shops.
You can find some of the strangest, useful, and useless things in existence. Sure, we have more mainstream shopping spots like Walmart and Amazon, but Sky Mall is the most offbeat place for anything you can possibly think of.
There's no other place where you can order an arcade machine, the "Largest Crossword Puzzle," a margarita machine and a hammock all in the same place.
And while flying along to your designated vacation spot, it's obvious your priority is to buy the most important things in life, such as that must-have set of designer one-piece pajamas,
While the fall semester will be here before we know it, summer vacation is a chance to have fun, see some attractions, and buy things.
So when you start figuring out your budget for this summer's vacation, make sure to set some money aside for that much-anticipated visit to the greatest off-ground shopping center - Sky Mall.
