04/29/09 - On the radar: five to look out for this summer in music and movies

Music:

1. Eric Hutchinson

A little twist to alternative rock, Hutchinson has a bluesy appeal, and he will be making his rounds this summer. His popularity is growing so grab tickets while they are still relatively inexpensive.

2. Jerry Robinson

The least heard of, of the five on this list. He is Indie and straight out of New York. His songs are both catchy and soothing. Check out his Myspace, or if you are in the New York Area, catch a show.

3. Kate Voegele

A guest-star on TV show "One Tree Hill," as singer Mia, she has been making her mark on the charts everywhere. Her newest CD drops in May, but several songs from it including "Manhattan From the Sky" can be heard via her MySpace page-and the song is anything but a disappointment.

4. The Script

Out of Ireland, the band released its album in the United States March 17 and have played in parts of the states and in Ireland. The hit, "The Man Who Couldn't be Moved," has been getting some airplay.

5. Kelly Clarkson

She released her album, All I Ever Wanted, back in March and will be appearing at several festivals during the summer. Her CD jumped to No. 1 immediately, even after being leaked on the net.

Movies:

1. "X-Men Origins"

Hugh Jackman and Andrew Reynolds-end of story.

2. "Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen"

Directed by Michael Bay and starring Shia Lebouf and Megan Fox, this sequel looks to be anything but a disappointment. A little bias here too-the introduction to the film was shot in my hometown of Bethlehem, Penn. However, no one would know it because it appears as though it is Chinatown in the film.

3. "Angels and Demons"

The thriller is based off of Dan Brown's novel, directed by Ron Howard, and stars Tom Hanks. It's set in Italy, but the Pope is asking for it not to be shown in Vatican City. Full of special effects, and built around an enticing plot, this one is a surefire hit. "Angels and Demons" will be released May 15.

4. "Up"

"Up" is the latest flick in the new trend of 3-D films. Directed by Pete Docter and co-directed by Bob Peterson, the film features a man flies around the world by attaching his house to a bunch of balloons. Also-the Cigar's entertainment editor, Caity Cudworth, got to see "Up" and interview the director-making it seem that much cooler to go see.

5. "Inglorious Basterds"

Directed by Quentin Tarantino and starring Brad Pitt, Mike Myers, Diane Kruger, and the voice of Samuel L. Jackson as the narrator-one has got to wonder how this film could be anything besides a smashing success. Not sure what it's about? According to IMDB, it is about the group of American soldiers "known as 'The Basterds'" that were "chosen specifically to spread fear throughout the Third Reich by scalping and brutally killing Nazis," while the Nazis occupied France during World War II.
