04/29/09 - The University of Rhode Island men's track and field team had several members of its team compete in the 2009 Penn Relays, held at Franklin Field on the campus of the University of Pennsylvania.
"Our approach to the season was laid-out in August," said head coach John Copeland. "It has been working fine, and other than a few adjustments here and there, we will stick with the plan."
Junior Derek Peterson was seventh at the Penn Relays against some of the country's best discus throwers. He had four throws over 170 feet and a best of 172 feet 7 inches. Peterson leads all Atlantic 10 performers in the event so far this year.
In the men's pole vault, sophomore Shinzaburo Kida placed ninth overall with a vault of 4.80 meters. It was Kida's highest clearance of the season, ranking second on the A-10 performance list.
The Rams also had members of their team perform at Brown University. Freshman Cory Thalheimer and junior Greg Borrelli had their best throws of the year in the shot put. Thalheimer had a throw of 50 feet and Borrelli threw 48 feet 10.25 inches. Thalheimer also had a best in the discus at 136 feet 7 inches.
Ryan Rettinger had his seasonal best in the javelin, 185 feet 7 inches. With his score he qualifies himself for the New England Championships.
Freshmen Nate Wigton ran a personal best in the 800 meters with a time of 1:57.64 and Nick Guscott finished second plane in the 100 meters at 10.95. Sophomore Sam Killen and freshman Greg Dean were 11.22 and 11.29 for fourth and fifth place respectively. Dean also had a jump of 6 feet 5 inches in the High Jump.
The Rams still have seven weeks left in their season, which includes the A-10's, New England's, NCAA Regional and the NCAA in June.
"I've been pleased with the team's performance so far this season," Copeland said. "It's been a fine rebuilding season to this point."
