Summer 2009 - We at the Cigar would like to welcome the class of 2013 (or later, for specialized degrees) to the University of Rhode Island for orientation. Hopefully, among the pages of our summer issue, the knowledge of your orientation leaders and your URI 101 class in the fall, all of your questions about the university will be answered.
The Cigar plays a vital role for the university, since we serve as the watchdog of both the administration and the student community. We provide campus news, editorial columns and classified ads four times a week from Tuesday to Friday.
At times, this doesn't make us many friends, especially when we have to criticize the actions of student groups or the URI president through the OpEd section. However, our duty as journalists is to inform the public, not to cozy up to our interest groups.
Also, unlike newspapers at other universities, the Cigar is always willing to take freshman submissions, whether they are CD reviews or letters disagreeing with our latest columns.
One of the most important things a first-year student can do is schedule an appointment with their academic adviser. If you don't visit, you will be unable to register for second semester classes. Also, it can be hard to make decisions about your future in a major if you don't receive any guidance from your adviser.
Those new to Rhode Island might want to know about the Rhode Island Public Transit Authority. On the first day of classes, there will be several RIPTA shuttles driving around campus, going from the Ryan Center to Upper College Road to Keaney Gymnasium and back. These are for everyone to use and they are free for students and faculty. That's right, just hop on.
And most importantly, enjoy the warm weather at orientation and for the first several weeks of school. Sooner or later the New England winter weather will hit and it's bye bye Scarborough Beach and hello winter jacket.
So, take the shuttle, meet your adviser, read the Cigar to find out about the university, enjoy URI, get a Del's lemonade and, most important of all, bring a pair of rain boots. You will need them.
