10/14/09 - For the third straight head-to-head meet this year, the University of Rhode Island women's tennis team has dominated its opponent, resulting in a 7-0 sweep.
Monmouth University was the victim of the Rams powerful play Sunday afternoon. The Rams improved their record to 3-0 with the victory. Monmouth fell to 3-5.
"We all went out there and played our game," junior Christen Cadigan said. "We knew they weren't the most powerful team, so we were ready to beat them and we performed."
The Rams were clearly the stronger team from top to bottom, as they swept both singles and doubles play.
Along the way, they accomplished a rare feat - sweeping the opponent without even losing a set. Of the 111 games played in the 15 sets, URI won 10 and limited Monmouth to only 10.
Sophomore Kirsten Leikem did not allow her opponent to win any of those games, as she defeated Monmouth's sophomore Jessica Slinger 6-0, 6-0 in the No. 1 singles match.
In the No. 2 singles match, sophomore Pam Emery defeated Monmouth freshman Nicole Lippens 6-2, 6-0.
Sophomore Tristany Leikem defeated her opponent in a timely fashion, winning 6-1, 6-0 against Monmouth junior Katie Tierney in the No. 3 singles match.
Cadigan represented URI with pride in the No. 4 singles match, defeating Monmouth freshman Dana Ferrari in consecutive 6 sets.
Senior Amanda Barletta defeated senior Diane Washer 6-3, 6-1. The 6-3 score of the first set of the match was the closest a Monmouth player came to winning a set.
Junior Brooke Hoover capped things off for the Rams, beating sophomore Britney Dupuis in No. 6 singles 6-0, 6-1.
"We all have been working on our individual games and not worrying about our opponents," Cadigan said.
Tristany and Kirsten Leikem squared off against Lippens and Tierney in the No. 1 doubles match. Things went swimmingly for the twin sisters, as they won the match 8-1.
Cadigan teamed up with Hoover to face Slinger and Washer. The two URI juniors won the match 8-3.
In the final match of the afternoon, Emery and Barletta worked together to defeat Ferrari and Kelly Friedrich in an 8-1 blowout.
Next on tap for the undefeated Rams is the University of Massachusetts at Amherst.
The Rams will square off against University of Massachusetts Wednesday afternoon at 3 P.M. in Amherst, Mass.
"The match against Massachusetts will be one of our biggest matches of the fall season," Cadigan said. "We beat them last year in a very tight match, and I know they were kind of mad about that," Cadigan said.
"We have been preparing a lot for this meet," Cadigan said. "Just working on the basics and looking to find what we can improve on."
