10/27/09 - This past weekend, sophomores Pam Emery, Tristany Leikem and Kirsten Leikem represented the University of Rhode Island women's tennis team in the Intercollegiate Tennis Association tournament hosted by Yale University in New Haven, Connecticut.
The tournament had representatives from schools such as Boston College, the University of Connecticut, Hofstra University, Seton Hall University, Fairfield University, Rutgers University, Drexel University, Harvard University and the host school, Yale University. Overall, 150 players from 45 teams around the northeast region competed in the tournament.
An ITA Tournament consists of a total 128 of singles players and 64 doubles players. Results from the tournament count towards a player's ITA rankings. Twenty-four ITA Regional Tournaments for NCAA Division I men and women have been taking place at campuses nationwide during this past weekend and will continue next weekend.
In the qualifying round, Emery defeated senior Paulina Rys 4-6, 6-1, and 6-0 respectively. Emery then went on to defeat Drexel freshman Emma Brook 6-2 and 6-3. In open singles, Emery dropped Dartmouth sophomore Carissa King 6-0, 6-7(2), 6-1. Emery would then lose to Princeton senior Melissa Saiontz 6-1 and 6-2.
Kirsten Leikem was leading Seton Hall sophomore Courtney Kilarski, 2-6, 6-4, 3-0, when Kilarski was forced to retire with flu-like symptoms. Leikem would then bow out in her second match to Rutgers sophomore Jennifer Holzberg losing 2-6, 6-3, 6-0.
Tristany Leikem defeated Fairfield senior Dana Postupack 6-1, and 6-0 to earn an opening round qualifying win. Leikem would then also lost in the second match to Hofstra junior Lauren Clifton losing 6-3, 6-3.
"The loss motivates me to work harder in between the fall and spring seasons. It was my first ITA experience but I'm looking forward to the spring season," Tristany Leikem said.
The Leikem sisters also competed in doubles play but were defeated in the first round by Columbia juniors Natalia Christenson and Natasha Makarova. Christenson and Makarova defeated the Leikem sisters 8-4.
"I felt we played well but we could've done better [in doubles play]," Tristany Leikem said. "We were allowed one singles player and one doubles team [per entering team] and each would advance through the play in the qualifiers."
Rhode Island wraps it's fall season up with a visit to East Meadow, N.Y. to battle Hofstra at Eisenhower Park on Wednesday. Play is slated to start at 2 p.m.
