10/30/09 - When readers open November's issue of Cosmopolitan Magazine, they may see a familiar face from the University of Rhode Island campus.
Senior and Cranston, R.I. native Mike Lonardo's picture and profile will be staring right back at the reader under the headline "Rhode Island's Most Eligible Bachelor."
Lonardo learned of his award after a close friend and fellow senior Dallas Grant entered Lonardo into the "most eligible bachelor contest" while he was on spring break in Acapulco, Mexico.
Grant told Lonardo the contest she was entering him in was for her friend who was interning at Cosmo, but Lonardo didn't think much of it, and never expected to win.
Three weeks later he received a phone call congratulating him for winning the title. After he accepted the honor, the magazine told Lonardo he had much work to do.
He went to three photo shoots over the summer in the Hamptons, N.Y. with 10 other bachelors over two weekends. Then he had two press days in New York City during October. Throughout the duration of his trip in NYC Lonardo appeared on the Today Show, talked on SIRIUS satellite radio and did a casting call for Wilhelmina Modeling.
The "grand finale" of the weekend, as Lonardo put it, was attending a party at the club Greenhouse. "It was one of the most amazing things I have ever done," Lonardo said.
Before entering the club, the bachelors were put into the green room, which they soon departed for a chance to walk down the red carpet. Later that night, Lonardo admitted, the bachelors were asked to walk the catwalk, where they were told to "just have fun with it."
Lonardo recalled that Cosmopolitan Editor-in-Chief Kate White helped during the event. "She was a great help the entire time, popping in and out and seeing how we were doing," Lonardo said. "It was a lot of fun; she was really nice."
After the magazine hit newsstands in November, Lonardo said it was funny to get text messages from people who saw his picture. But he still couldn't avoid the razzing from his brothers at Zeta Beta Tau fraternity.
