11/03/09 - Coming off of an impressive 4-0 victory over Xavier University, the University of Rhode Island women's soccer team finished the season with a win over Richmond University, 2-1 but lost the last game of the season against George Washington University 2-1.

In Friday's win over Richmond the two goals by junior Kaylen Shimoda were the only ones needed for the Rams to win.

Shimoda scored her two goals over a span of a little over a minute in the second half. She scored her game-typing goal at the 60:47 mark when she put a hard shot on the goal from 15 yards out on the ride side. The junior then tallied the eventual game winning goal, when she took junior Nelli Ruotsalainen's pass and beat a defender on the right side of the box.

Rhode Island outshot the Richmond Spiders 16 shots to four, and also out-cornered them, nine to one.

Goalkeeper Tara Murphy only faced one shot and allowed a goal from Richmond's sophomore Emily Dale, who scored her third goal of the season.

Sunday's game finished out the 2009 season and featured a close game against George Washington University.

The Rams got on the scoreboard first when sophomore forward Alexis Veith scored her fifth goal of the season at the 54th minute.

The Colonials answered back to Veith's goal five minutes later when junior Jillian Morgan scored from a shot from the top of the box and beat Murphy.

George Washington went ahead, scoring in the 78th minute when senior midfielder Brittany Eger beat Murphy one-on-one.

Murphy made two saves for the Rams, while on the other side sophomore Lindsay Rowe stopped seven shots and earned herself the win. Rhode Island outshot the Colonials 16 shots to seven, and also out cornered them eight to four.

The Rams will be losing five senior players this year, including, Colleen Dowd, Kassandra Spitler, Kristie Moltz, Ina Bjorklid and Amanda Thomas.

"We will definitely miss the seniors!" Veith said. All five of them were a huge part of this team. As players they were a big part of the games we won and off the field I think they'll be missed even more."

The team, however, is still looking ahead to next season. "Getting better for next year starts now in the offseason," Veith said. "We have to stay in shape and continue building team chemistry."

Shimoda led the team with six goals and 14 points. Veith finished second on the team which five goals and 11 points. Freshman forward Ashley Evangelista finished first on the team with four assists.

"Most of all I'm excited that a lot us will be seniors and juniors, lending the team a lot of experience," Veith said. I'm excited to use the losses we had this season as motivation to make sure that doesn't happen again next season."

The Rams finished their 2009 season, 6-12-1.
