11/06/09 - If you travel north from Hartford, Conn. on Interstate 91 or south from Amherst, Mass. you will see a bright green sign that reads Six Flags New England next exit, which is essentially the Agawam, Mass. exit.

When people ask me where I'm from they almost never know where Agawam, Mass. is. This is when I ask them if they've ever been to Six Flags. They normally respond with, "Yea! I love it there!" I tell them that they've been to my town, and then I get the classic response, "That's in Springfield."

Most people have the misconception that Six Flags New England is located in Springfield, Mass. when it's in fact closer to Suffield, Conn. than it is Springfield. Six Flags is in walking distance from the border of Suffield and Agawam, while Springfield is more of a hike. It's at least four miles from Six Flags.

If you were to Google search Six Flag's address it will say, 623 Main St., Agawam, Mass. not 623 Main St., Springfield, Mass.

Six Flags New England is filled with wild roller coasters, carnival games and bumper-to-bumper traffic. Having the amusement park one mile down your street, however, is not all that amusing. My small town turns into a circus when summer hits and Six Flags has it's grand opening. People with zero class fill my local convenience stores in bikini tops, short shorts and bad attitudes.

Pumping gas at the local gas station sometimes turns into an adventure. It takes at least five or ten minutes to find an open pump and while your waiting you get to listen to loud rap music in the cars surrounding you.

The line to pay for your gas or bag of chips is normally relatively long and you get the chance to see their water park outfits up close and personal. Not to mention the Six Flags goers' bikinis rarely flatter their body types. When I finally get the chance to fill my tank or buy a pint of Ben and Jerry's ice cream, I still have to pull out onto Main Street.

My street is off of Main Street with a gas station and convenience store on either side. The end of my street is where every "Six Flags goer" flocks because it's the one place you can buy gas and food at the same location. This is when leaving my house gets chaotic. Not only do I have to nudge out with my blinker on, but it's also a very rare occasion when a "Six Flags goer" lets you onto the main road. It's as if I'm trying to beat them to the Superman ride or Batman the Dark Night, when in fact I'm just trying to get to work on time.

Even when I'm taking a left out onto Main Street in the opposite direction of Six Flags people still think I'm going to somehow beat them to the park. If I'm traveling by myself in a work uniform, going in the opposite direction of the amusement park, I'm not trying to beat you to the park. So if you come to Agawam, to visit Six Flags, be courteous to the locals.
