11/06/09 - The year 2002 was definitely one of firsts. With Spiderman hitting the big screen and shattering box office records, 2002 kicked off the superhero movie binge that took over Hollywood. It was also the year that competitive reality shows began raiding our television screens. "American Idol" began its first season in 2002, and with its overwhelming popularity, it most likely led to the splurge in reality television.
In addition to television and Hollywood movies, 2002 opened up a whole new world for music. Artists like Avril Lavigne, John Mayer and Vanessa Carlton, all singer/songwriters, made their debut that year. Here's a look at some of the songs that began it all.
"I'm a Slave 4 U" - Britney Spears
Oh, Britney. This may have been the beginning of her downward spiral that led to her infamous breakdown. "I'm a Slave" was probably the first song that opened up a whole new risqué window for Britney. No other artist took the term "sex sells" to heart as much as she. Britney was no longer seen as the innocent schoolgirl with braided hair from her first single, "Hit Me Baby One More Time." No, now Britney seemed to be growing into the insane sexpot we all know her as today.
"Complicated" - Avril Lavigne
Avril's first single debuted in 2002, but along with "Complicated" came the punked-out rocker girl style, with pink hair, thick black eyeliner and of course the "female tie." After winning a MTV VMA for best new artist and being nominated for eight Grammys in 2002, Avril released two other radio hits that year, "Sk8er Boi" and "I'm With You." With a new style of pop music and a new fashion sense, Avril became a favorite among girls in 2002.
"No Such Thing" - John Mayer
Before his relationships with Jennifer Aniston and Jessica Simpson, this heartbreaker came to be known for his break-out single "No Such Thing." Who could forget the summer of 2002 hearing "I wanna run through the halls of my high school. I wanna scream at the top of my lungs," on the radio three or four times a day? Following his first hit, Mayer released other chart toppers like "Your Body is a Wonderland," and "Why Georgia." Ultimately, 2002 was a great first year for John Mayer's career.
"A Moment Like This" - Kelly Clarkson
So, this is where it all began. The international phenomenon "American Idol" premiered its very first season in 2002. Millions of people tuned in each week to watch Kelly, Justin, Tamyra and others battle it out for the title of "American Idol." As we all know, Kelly won the first season, which launched her successful career as an artist. Her first single "A Moment Like This," supposedly broke the Beatle's record for the biggest leap to No. 1 on the charts. As for "American Idol," the show has become an absolute obsession for Americans since its premiere in 2002.
2002 clearly opened up a lot of new talent to the entertainment world. With its music, TV shows and movies, it really was a year of firsts.

Excuse me...Survivor was the show that started the reality craze, not American Idol.
