11/17/09 - The University of Rhode Island men's hockey team suffered through a rough weekend dropping both games of a two-game set to Penn State. The Rams lost Friday night's game by a final of 4-1, and lost Saturday's game in the shootout by a final of 4-3.

"Penn State is always good," junior forward Jaryd Coleman said. "We play [them] every year and it's a big rivalry. We just needed to play tougher."

Rhode Island started junior goalie Joe Spagnoli in net, while Penn State countered with junior goalie Teddy Humel.

The game had a physical feel and fast tempo from the start. However, Penn State did a better job controlling the puck and setting up in the offensive zone early on.

The first goal of the night came in a 4-on-4 situation off the stick of Penn State sophomore forward Nick Seravelli midway through the period.

With three and a half minutes to play in the period, Rams sophomore forward Evan Dietz picked up the puck in the neutral zone and skated down ice. He passed the puck to junior defenseman Colton Hurley whose shot on net was saved. Jaryd Coleman then picked up the rebound and put it home for his second goal of the season.

"It was a good break," Coleman said. "Dietz turned [in the zone] and made a great pass and I caught a lucky break.

Penn State wasted no time regaining the lead in the second period, scoring less than a minute and a half into the period with senior defenseman John Conte picking up the goal.

Penn State scored, extending their lead to 3-1 with just over eight minutes to play in the game with a goal coming from freshman forward Mike Broccolo. With Spagnoli pulled from the goal, Penn State then added an empty net goal with one second remaining from senior forward Ryan Paradis as the Nittany Lions would win by a final score of 4-1.

Each team had chosen to start the same goalies for Saturday night's game, with Spagnoli in net for Rhode Island, and Humel for Penn State.

The Rams struck first in the evening with freshman forward Mike Tait picking up his fourth goal of the season just less than three minutes into the game.
