11/18/09 - With the release of "Twilight: New Moon," it seems as though Twilight fever is sweeping the nation harder, faster and stronger than Swine Flu. Teen and tween girls have been hit particularly hard by the brooding-bloodsucker epidemic and thus far, it is showing no signs of stopping its spread.
Symptoms include severe shaking, incessant screaming, fainting, crying and having an almost psychotic infatuation with one or more of the characters. And if you or someone you know is already wearing a "Team Edward" or "Team Jacob" T-shirt…well, it may already be too late.
In the midst of the mayhem, it's safe to say there has never been a better time to be a sexy vampire. Having that rare and mysterious combination of chiseled good looks and a predilection for drinking human blood has never been hotter. Just ask Kellan Lutz, who plays Emmett in the film, the "lovable teddy bear" of the Cullen clan. The studly star sat down with the Cigar to chat about the Twilight phenomenon, how to have fun on jury duty and why even guys should give Twilight a chance.
On meeting Lutz, there are two things you notice about him immediately: the first is that he is extremely, unnervingly handsome- like, genetically-engineered-for-hotness handsome. The second is that he's super friendly.
He looks like an Abercrombie model (probably because he was, at one time, an Abercrombie model) and he acts like an excitable golden retriever that just found a really cool stick.
Lutz was psyched to bring his good-natured vibe to the part of Emmett, remarking with a grin, "Oh yeah, I threw a lot of Kellan into Emmett. It's amazing to play such a happy character, especially in a franchise."
"I remember my team wanted me to audition for Edward," Lutz continued, "and I was just like, 'Guys, I'm really in the mood for a happy character this time, because I had just finished "Generation Kill" in Africa, where I was killing people and blowing stuff up and seeing the poverty that's in Africa, so I kept turning down that audition. And just, Emmett was there, and I was like, 'What about Emmett?' And long story short, here I am, just loving my life and loving my character."
