02/09/10 - Three University of Rhode Island athletes qualified for the Eastern College Athletic Conference Championships as the women's track team competed at the New Balance Games this past weekend.
"The ECAC Championship is a difficult meet to qualify for," head coach Laurie Feit-Melnick said. "It is good for our athletes to qualify early in the season."
The three athletes to qualify for the meet were senior Shayna Daugherty, sophomore Kalyn Sheehan and junior Najila Singleton. The Rams' 4x400-meter relay team also met ECAC standards with its performance.
"Our team is working together," Feit said. "And we are looking to improve as we move forward to [the] A-10's."
Daugherty finished in second in the high jump with a leap of 5 feet and 8.5 inches. She also recorded a personal best in the 60-meter hurdles, recording a time of 9.07 seconds.
"Shayna's doing a great job," Feit said. "She's getting to be her best."
Sheehan also recorded a personal best in one of her respective events: the 500-meter run. Her time of 1:15.97 placed her in third for the event.
Singleton qualified for the ECAC's in the 400-meter run, clocking a time of 56.94 seconds for an 11th place finish.
The 4x400 meter team posted a season best time of 3:51.22 to finish seventh in the event.
Only ten members of the team competed in the two-day meet that was held at the Armory Track and Field Center in New York City. The talent pool was deep, with some of the best teams in the country in attendance, including Louisiana State University, the University of South Carolina, Xavier University, University of California at Los Angeles, Villanova University, Duke University and Seton Hall University.
"It was a great experience for our team," Feit said. "They performed really well against some of the top teams in the country."
The full team will compete this Friday at the Valentine's Classic in Boston, Mass.
"It's a big meet to get our team ready for conference championships," Feit said.
The Valentine's Classic will be the last meet that the Rams compete in before the Atlantic-10 Championship meet.
