2/10/10 - With the end of its three-year contract approaching, the University of Rhode Island's chapter of the American Association of University Professors plans to go into contract negotiations in June.
Faculty members who want to be involved with changing and updating their contract can volunteer for the All-University Collective Bargaining Committee, or the AUBC.
The AUCBC puts together a list of items including raises in salaries, changes in health benefits and anything that has to do with leave time.
In order to volunteer, faculty members have to be a member of the national AAUP, which is a national association for professors who work full time at universities, as well at the URI AAUP chapter. Faculty members interested in joining the committee will then be chosen by the executive committee. The faculty members can then vote to decide the new contract details.
President of the URI AAUP Wendy Roworth said the committee would like to have members represent the different colleges of the university. The AUCBC will consist of 15 members: at least three members of the College of Arts and Sciences and at least one faculty member from each other college including the College of Business Administration, the College of Engineering, the College of the Environment and Life Sciences, the College of Human Services, among others.
"The big part of the bargaining is we have a certain salary structure under this contract and we are aiming to increase it, improve it, and do the best we can do [to] help our members," Roworth said. All full time faculty are under a contract and are governed by the URI AAUP chapter, which is affiliated with the National AAUP.
The National AAUP, which participates in the running of institutions, works together with administration to negotiate a contract that will then apply to the faculty.
Roworth said negotiations for the newest contract are beginning this spring with the help of the AUCBC. AUCBC, she said, is made up of faculty volunteers who meet to look at the current contract and "bargain" on what to modify.
Roworth said the AUCBC then brings these updates to the executive committee, which has an elected leadership of five members on campus who then vote to decide whether to bring any of these updates to the representatives.
After the contract has come to an end, the committee will join together to make new negotiations for the upcoming contract.
Roworth said, "We go into the meeting with what we would like to change and the other side comes in with what they will offer to give. We then discuss, debate, argue and negotiate."
