3/11/10 - University of Rhode Island students who picked up yesterday's issue of the Providence Journal may have noticed an editorial written by their very own President David M. Dooley.

Entitled "URI has big role in state's economic renewal," Dooley wrote about the university's new responsibility to aid the state of Rhode Island in its economic recovery.

Those who follow his media coverage know that he's been adamant about making URI more of a research-driven university. He lobbies for hands-on research, and he talks about collaboration with Rhode Island businesses and corporations to help the state's bleak economy. He's also been vigilant in creating the Strategic Planning and Budget Council for URI, and considering the implication of a four-credit course system. With all of this on his plate, some might wonder, at the very least, when he has time to sleep - or better yet, will he be able to actually pull off all of these tasks?

Although he's pitched some big ideas in his short time at the university, his past at Montana State University should conjure at least a little faith from some of his doubters that his plans will eventually come to fruition.

At a media breakfast held on campus last week, Dooley humbly and candidly discussed to a room full of journalists his understanding of the challenges that lay ahead.

He explained that while he was at Montana State University, Montana was experiencing similar economic issues to those of Rhode Island. By the time he left, both the state and the university were in better shape due to a culmination of internal research and development, and collaboration with the state's government and private sectors.

Dooley's plan is to put the same philosophy into practice in the Ocean State.

"…We are going to succeed or fail together," he said at last week's breakfast when discussing the state's collaboration with URI. He later added, "I wouldn't be saying anything like what I'm saying … if I didn't believe it was fully possible."

Dooley was quick to point out in yesterday's editorial that Rhode Island is not exactly on the fast track for economic recovery, but he's accepted the challenge either way.

Looking toward the future, it appears as if URI is in good hands.
