The Cigar kicks it '80s-style with cast of 'Hot Tub Time Machine'

3/18/10 - LAKE TAHOE - It's "Winterfest" at the Lake Tahoe Hyatt and "Hot Tub Time Machine" star Craig Robinson has just stormed the stage with a dazzling blonde mullet. With '80s cover band Aquanet behind him, he belts out a killer rendition of "Jesse's Girl." Robinson stomps around the stage with his swagger turned up to 11, chains swinging from his neck, his aviators planted firmly in place.
Guests at MGM Studios' "Hot Tub Time Machine" press junket witnessed this stellar spectacle last Saturday night. In addition to Robinson, who performs the same Rick Springfield anthem in the movie, MGM brought cast members Rob Corddry, Clark Duke, Crispin Glover and director Steve Pink to the party. Taking on the throwback theme, attendees mingled in day-glow ski suits, legwarmers and Don Johnson-status pastel sport coats. So, if you were looking to party it up '80s style with some hilarious dudes last weekend, this was the spot.
The "HTTM" junket was held in the kind of place that trumps even picturesque of postcards (with the added bonus of ski slopes and slot machines). MGM Studios graciously sent some journalists up to this star-studded '80s extravaganza, and I was lucky enough to be along for the ride, repping Rhody full-force on the west coast.
At the next morning's roundtable interview, the talent looking groggy. Rob Corddry is rocking the exact same outfit he wore last night because he "got in a powdered sugar fight" with Robinson. And on top of the confectionary wardrobe malfunction, he's also suffering a severe hangover.
"You guys don't get hungover," he says bitterly. "College kids, it's like this cute little 'no!' When you get older, you get hungover. So get ready. My hangovers feel like cancer... I assume." He pauses, "I always like to start an interview with a cancer joke."
Corddry may not be able to handle his hangovers, but they're a way of life for his character Lou in "HTTM:" a desperate alcoholic, Lou is a middle-aged wreck who's as determined to party like a freshman with a fake ID.

Being as dull as it is, Hot Tub Time Machine winds up begging the central question that it was never ready to answer: Why idolize the '80s yet again? The answer is dismally simple: The film isn't for children of the '80s so much as it is for people who grew up listening to Reagan's children ramble about their bygone youth. (Continued…)
