Graduate student Ryan Drugan, a political science major, has many ideas for the Town of Narragansett and is hoping to be elected to the Town Council in November.

3/18/10 - University of Rhode Island graduate student Ryan Drugan plans to run in the November election for Narragansett Town Council where he said he hopes to bring about change in the community.

Drugan, a political science major, is in his first year of graduate school after graduating in May.

During his time at the university he held a seat in Student Senate as a representative for the freshman class, and served as vice president and president of the College Democrats, a program on campus to help students get involved in politics and the community.

Drugan said, being knowledgeable about American history, he believes it is undemocratic for a person to run unopposed in an election.

Because of this belief, he ran as a candidate for the District 34 state representative position against current representative David A. Caprio in 2008. District 34 includes the towns of Narragansett, Peace Dale and Wakefield.

Drugan said he decided not to run for state representative again because Caprio now has Wakefield resident Teresa Tanzi as opposition for the coming election.

"I realized there is a lot of stuff going on in Narragansett, so I'll run for town council," Drugan said. "Things ranging from business issues, to environment, to the very famous issue on campus, the sticker ordinance."

He said he hopes to focus on is the environment in Narragansett by taking baby steps.

Drugan said he plans to use 100 percent recycled paper and other sustainable items as the first step before pushing environmental issues on the community and showing how much waste can be reduced.

Drugan said if he gets elected he will also be looking into putting a nature and wildlife preserve off Kinney Avenue in Narragansett.

In addition to making the town a greener community, Drugan said he plans to help increase the tourism in Narragansett. He said business and tourism is one of the main resources that keep Narragansett alive.
